In October of 2020, I decided to spray paint the ferns on my front porch black for Halloween. My ferns were looking a bit sad, but I love the drama they provide near the front door. So, I grabbed a can of black spray paint and went to town! I was able to keep the drama, but make it appropriate for my Halloween porch! A win/win! Here’s how to spray paint flowers black for Halloween – it’s as easy as it sounds!
This does take a little time to cover every frond! I went through several cans of black spray paint. You can certainly use the cheap kind because these will eventually be tossed. And don’t worry about it being perfect, no one will be up close! I love the dramatics from the street level!
I spray painted my ferns, but you could spray any flowers that are ready to be thrown out. The dying element adds to the character of the Halloween porch! Leaving dead flowers out without spray painting them could be really fun too!
Once the ferns were spray painted black, I never watered them again. They did continue to keep growing though, so little green fronts were starting to pop up! I joked last year that even when this plant lady is trying to kill her plants, they keep growing! Ha!
Here is the other side of our covered porch! I love me some skeletons, especially the life-size kind! Also, give me all the creepy cloth!

Would you ever try to spray paint your flowers black for Halloween?! I always have ferns from the summer, so this will probably be something I do every year now! I’ll be sure to update this post with my Halloween porch for 2021 when it’s all done! XO
