When we originally finished our basement a few years ago, I asked the contractor to add a chalkboard built into the wall in the bar area. It’s simply a 3.5 inch wood frame built around a patch of wall painted with chalkboard paint. The entire chalkboard measures 36 x 48. Recently, we had the idea to add a dart board in the basement, and it just happens to fit perfectly in the chalkboard space! Here is how to hang a dart board on a chalk wall! It’s super simple!
Deciding on a Good Spot
This little corner space felt like the perfect spot for a dart board. It’s near the bar where people hang out, and there was enough room to stand back the regulated distance for throwing. The measurement from the floor to the top of the wood frame is 82 inches. The top of the dart board measures 77 inches from the floor. It just so happened to work out the we didn’t have to alter the chalkboard!
Because the chalk wall was already existing, we also now have a built-in scoreboard for Cricket too! Our kids are 12 and 13, so of course we already have little dart marks in the wall! I’ve decided not to worry about it. It’s just a wall and the dart board is bringing us joy as a family.
Steve and I used to play darts in college together when we were dating, so throwing darts with him brings back so many memories! Here is a photo in front of the bar where we had many day dates. We graduated in 2001 and 2002. This blurry photo taken by our kids in 2015. Ha!
Our Dart Board
We ordered this Dart Board, and Steve hung it using an anchor and screw. The dart board comes with hanging instructions and a measuring tape, making is simple. It also comes with 6 darts. I would advise grabbing a few more darts in case one breaks!
Because we were having some darts hit the tile floor (whoops!), I decided to add this 3 x 5 foot rug in front of it. It seems to be doing the trick by “catching” the stray darts. You can read all about the sports wall in this blog post! It’s one of my favorite things in the space!
I ended up adding a small piece of Washi tape on the tile floors to mark the throw spot. We’re having so much fun with this simple addition to the basement! If you don’t have a chalkboard, they sell dart boards inside wooded cases. I’ve also seen people add cork board behind the dart board to protect the walls.
I hope this inspired you on how to hang a dart board on a chalk wall! You really don’t need a lot of space to add one to your hang out area! XO
