We are almost a year out from our kitchen upgrades being finished and I’m still trying to share all the details! Today, I want to share more about our kitchen pendant lights. I take my time with making home decisions and these lights were no exception! After many options were brought home because I’m a visual person, I landed on these oversized brass pendant lights over the kitchen island.
Choosing Pendant Lights
Initially, I wasn’t even going to change the pendant lights in here as I still really liked the black rattan pendant lights we installed a few years back. Once the remodel started to take shape, I just new I wanted something new. After scouring Pinterest and Instagram, I sold myself on dome shaped brass pendants. As stated before, I’m very visual. I like to bring items into the space and see them, touch them, measure, etc. At one point, I think I had four lighting options hanging around our home. We stopped into our Crate and Barrel after finding these online, and they happened to have this dome brass light fixture hanging in the store.
We loved in store and ordered two. After bringing other lights home, so were too yellow, some weren’t the right shape, some looked cheap. The ones we chose were just right!
You can see the before pendants in this photo.
The hang up for me was deciding if they were too big or not. We have a long and narrow island and I wasn’t sure if these were going to overtake the space. In the end, the message here is GO BIG OR GO HOME! I can’t imagine them any other way and the large scale feels dramatic and substantial in our large kitchen. For reference, the dimensions of our island: 82.5 inches long X 36.25 inches wide.
Hanging the Brass Pendant Lights
After deciding on these brass pendant lights, we had a professional electrician remove the old ones and install the new ones. This brought more decisions to make about height placement. Our electrician literally stood on the countertops to help with this process. We have 9 foot ceilings in our kitchen. From the top of the ceiling to the top of the brass hook is 20.5 inches. The bottom of the light is 36″ from the top of the island.
Things to Consider When Hanging
- can we still see out the window and into the kitchen
- will my tall husband hit his head 🙂
- are they low enough to provide adequate lighting below
- there are standard/suggested measurements, but all lights and spaces look different
Things I Love About These Brass Pendant Lights
- What sold me was the hammered look. They aren’t too yellow or shiny like others I saw.
- These are heavy and substantial. You kind of get what you pay for here.
- The hanging mechanism feels modern yet casual, which fits our home.
- These don’t put off tons of light because of the dome shape. We have recessed lighting in here, so we don’t really need these to light up our kitchen. We definitely turn these on most days and have them on at night for a nice glow. I use 60 watt G25 light bulbs.
- Loving the oversized look so much! It’s really what catches your eye when you look in our kitchen.
- Classic style and design that I hopefully won’t get sick of any time soon!
If you are in the market, I highly suggest checking out these oversized brass pendant lights for over your kitchen island! One of these would also look amazing over a dining room or kitchen table. You can find other kitchen posts linked here.
