We have had our basement finished for several years now and I’m finally getting to posting more about it! This small basement bathroom is actually one of my favorite spaces in our whole house. And all these years later, it still feels classic and I still love it. We loved the black paint so much, I ended up painting our upstairs powder bath black as well! Here are details about this small bathroom and what I love about a small bathroom painted black.
Size of the Black Painted Bathroom
When we were laying out the plans for the basement with the contractor, we knew we wanted this to be considered a “full bath”. Therefore, we had to find room for a shower, sink, and toilet. I’m not going to lie, when it was all framed out, I did not think it was possible because it looked so small! The fact is that it is a small bathroom. But, it’s in the basement and it doesn’t get used on a daily basis. And no one really showers in it. It’s nice to have, and we’ve had a few guests shower here, but it’s mostly for resale purposes!
It serves its purpose and it’s pretty, so it’s a win/win for me! The door barely clears the sink, so good job to our contractors! Steve, my husband, is a tall guy, so as long as he fits, we’re good!
Shower + Tile Details
We decided to take classic subway tile with dark grout halfway up the wall around the sink and all the way up the shower. This allows for a pop of white and a contract against the black paint. It also adds some dimension and makes this small bathroom gain a little character. We put in glass doors on the shower to make the room look larger. Managing to squeeze a full size shower into this small bathroom allows for future homeowners to use the basement bedroom as an actual bedroom/bathroom space. I added a shower caddy over the shower head since we don’t have built in storage for shower supplies.
You’ll see mixed metals in this bathroom, which I’m a big fan of. We chose chrome shower head, shower, faucet and gold sconces and mirror.
Built-In Storage
Our contractor had the genius idea of adding a built-in storage space to store towels, toiletries, etc. Because we chose a pedestal sink with no storage, these shelves keep everything off the ground and in one place. I love this feature of this tiny bathroom! Not only does it provide function, it allows for a little decor and character in the space. I love the inset of the white on this wall to make it really pop off the black paint. These small shelves provide all the storage we need in here!
Black Paint Color
This paint color is one of my favorite finds ever! It’s an almost-black called Graphite from Benjamin Moore. We painted our basement bar cabinets and island this same color. Two bathrooms in our home are this color, and the exterior accent color of our home is this color! Safe to say it’s a good one! Most people think a dark paint in a small space would make it look smaller. I think it makes it look moody and it brings the drama – small bathrooms are places to have fun!
These gold hooks are from IKEA. These Turkish towels are from Amazon! Pretty towels and hooks can take up empty wall space, look pretty, and be functional!
Sink + Surrounding Accessories
- Sink – we chose a simple pedestal for this bathroom because it has a small footprint.
- Mirror – this is actually a mirrored tray I found at Homegoods that I turned into a wall mirror!
- Sconces – I decided to do simple sconces on either side of the mirror to make it really bright with the lights on (no windows and dark paint). Found on Etsy.
- Faucet is from Home Depot.
- Towel hook is from Anthropologie. Towel is from Target.
- Woven basket for trash. This room needed a little different texture, so bringing in something natural felt right. I think this one was from Homegoods.
- Amber glass soap dispenser is from Amazon.
- Leather vase was a gift from my mom.
- Fresh stem cut from my houseplants! This room gets no natural light, so this is a great way to bring in something alive into the space. Each stem usually lasts a few weeks.
Artwork in the Black Bathroom
The only wall space left in this bathroom is behind the toilet. Because this is a basement bathroom, and we entertain often and watch sports down here, I thought it would be fun to add something a little quirky. Something to draw your eye and a conversation piece. You can read all about this quirky artwork in this post!
Vintage Rug
I ended up finding a small scale vintage rug to put in this bathroom. The color is perfect, it’s just what this tiny room needed for some color and dimension. It’s thin enough that it doesn’t get caught on the door. Most of my small vintage rugs throughout our home are from Etsy.
I hope you enjoyed the tour of our small basement bathroom painted black! The flooring is tile. I’m so happy to have a full bathroom in the basement – she’s small but mighty! XO
