Every year, I purchase three Boston ferns to hang on our covered back patio area. These run around $15 each and provide whimsy and color and texture until fall. You can certainly keep the ferns in the hanging pots they come in, but I like to repot them into slightly larger and prettier hanging baskets. This allows the roots to breath and grow and it just looks a little more custom than keeping them in the plastic grow pots. Details below!
Boston Fern Care
I live in the midwest, so ferns start showing up in stores around mid-April. They usually last outside until late October here. If you live in the south or a warmer climate, you will likely be able to use these all year long – lucky you! Boston ferns like shade! The fronds will burn if left in the sun. Mine get some sun, but they hang under a covered patio space, so mostly shade. You can find these at Walmart, any local garden store, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. They are pretty well available and pretty inexpensive!
I water these every day or every other day in the hot heat and as needed in the spring and fall. These are pretty easy to maintain!

Hanging Basket and Hanger
You can find the updated version of my hanging planters and plant hangers here. They are around $15. I reuse mine year after year. Several years ago, we hung plant hangers in three spots around our covered patio space. These are inexpensive and can be left up all year. They are sturdy and can hold these repotted ferns easily. I hope this post was helpful if you are thinking about grabbing some Boston ferns this year! XO
