Record breaking temps today in Kansas City, but September means fall to me! I’ve slowly started pulling things together to create a cozy fall porch. The only new items I purchased were two large mums at Costco and two pumpkins from Walmart. I will add more real pumpkins to the porch as the weeks go on. And of course we will be decking the exterior of our house for Halloween in the coming weeks as well!
We LOVE having a large and inviting porch! Curb appeal is everything to me and a large porch provides a great space to decorate and make inviting for guests and ourselves.
Fall Plants on the Porch
The real show stopper of this early fall porch decor is those Kimberly Queen Ferns! I always purchase two of them in May and they last through October. They get partial shade and I water them daily and they thrive under this covered porch. These might be the biggest ones I’ve ever had! PORCH HACK: Add height and drama by placing ferns on top of cheap stools.
This year, I purchased two large mums at Costco. I like to purchase them closed up so they last longer. They are starting to slowly open up and they will be that purple/burgandy shade. Partial shade and a full daily watering usually keep the mums happy for several weeks.
In between the rocking chairs, I planted kale, a light purple mum, and a grass. All of those plants were from Home Depot.
Pumpkins on the Porch
Last year I purchased some faux pumpkins for the porch. I brought them out again this year. After seeing pumpkins out at Walmart yesterday, I grabbed an orange and a green one to add to the mix. I think when you have a mix, it’s hard to tell which are real and which are fake!
Layered Rugs on the Porch
The striped layering rug is from my stash of rugs! It’s not “outdoor”, but because this is a covered porch I usually buy what I like. This half coir rug is perfect for our football loving family! It screams fall and adds some additional warmth to the door area.
Fall Porch Decor Wreath
I’m using this fall wreath again this year because I love the soft, non-traditional colors and the texture and drama it adds to our black front door. It’s what draws my eye in! I found this wreath last year at Ross. One of the great things about shopping at stores like Ross and Homegoods, is there is a limited amount of items. This means not everyone in your neighborhood will have the same one!
Lanterns on the Porch
I found these lanterns at Homegoods earlier in the year. They have been on my porch ever since. Lanterns work for every season which I love! A one time purchase you can use over and over again. These are solar, so they turn on at night on their own. No fuss!
Fall Porch Decor Accessories
I added some leaned birch sticks against the side of the door. You can barely see them because of the size of the ferns. The feathery stems were some extras I had sitting in my garage. I’m all about the added texture and layers in any space. We keep string lights up around our front door all year long. They are set on a timer and they also come on and shut off on their own. They add a touch of ambience and softness and warmth every night. I love them!
Our cozy fall porch decor is achieved by creating different heights, clumping items together, and adding texture and warmth. Like I said before, I reused so many items and barely spent any money. I will leave it like this for a few more weeks and then bring on Halloween! xo
