We have four people in our family, including two teenagers. This means we have phones and iPads and Air Pods and portable chargers, and all the things that need plugged in and charged! Our old system, a charging station from Amazon worked fine. Because we had this in the kitchen, it was always in my line of sight and the cords always annoyed me.
After doing a little research, I decided I would inquire about adding a charging station inside a drawer. Our electrician was easily able to do it and it has been so amazing! I think many newer homes are doing this as a part of a build. Our home is 10 years old and it just wasn’t even a thing back then. Here’s how to add a charging station inside a drawer.
Placement for the Charging Station
This built-in piece sits right between our kitchen and our eating area/breakfast nook area. It’s kind of a hub. It holds our Alexa, a lamp I turn on every day, travel treasures and books. The drawers hold extra glassware, candles, sunglasses, portable chargers, napkins, and anything else I can shove in there! In the middle, top drawer, I wanted to see about “hiding” a charging station. I moved the cutting boards out of the way, but the built-in already had power going to it, so I figured this was a good sign.
Installing an Outlet
Our electrician was able to install an outlet behind the top drawer in order to plug the power strip in. Behind the drawers the wall was hallowed out already.
The long cord for the power strip is held tight behind the drawer so we can still close the drawer.
Accessing the Outlet
Our electrician had to drill a hole in the back of the top drawer to snake the cord through to the outlet.
Using a Power Strip in the Drawer
Tim, our electrician, picked up this exact power strip for us for less than $20. It has several USB connectors and plug-ins. For our family of four, this was enough for us. I decided to just use velcro Command strips to adhere the power strip to the back of the drawer. It’s been done for weeks and has never budged!
Our teenagers “dock” their phones here overnight to charge. I used this every single day to charge my phone and my headphones. When we have company, they charge their phones here. It’s SOOOOO convenient and there is no visual clutter! There is enough room for the phones to lay down on the bottom of the drawer while they are charging. The charger and the wood have never felt “hot”, so that is not a concern.
This was such an easy upgrade and change to make to our daily lifestyle. I would highly recommend if you are also annoyed with the cords!
During this process, I organized the top drawer to include all cords, charging blocks, portable chargers, etc. It feels clean and organized and everyone knows where everything goes! My dream! xo
