We recently went on a tent camping trip with my parents and my sister and her kids. My parents are camping pros and do it often and they have all the gear! And my mom always comes with all the fun recipes to try, either on the portable stovetop or over the fire. We’ve made these pie iron apple pies over the campfire for two years in a row and my kids will always request them. Sitting around a campfire is one of life’s greatest pleasures! Here’s how to make pie iron apple pies over the campfire.
These pies require very few ingredients and can be made over the campfire, so they are easy to prep for! My parents have two cast iron pie irons which we make these in. First step is to get your fire going?
Supplies Needed
- Pie irons
- apple pie filling
- bread of choice
- butter
- cooking spray
- cinnamon/sugar
How to Make Pie Iron Apple Pies
You can make these apple pies with any kind of bread, but when camping, why not just use the good old fashioned white bread?! Butter two slices of bread on one side. Spray the cast iron on the inside with cooking spray so your bread doesn’t get stuck.
Next, lay the bread (butter side down) into the pie iron. Add canned apple pie filling to one side of the bread. Close and secure the pie iron and you’re ready to “bake” your apple pie!
Cooking Time
Be sure to flip the pie iron as you are cooking over the fire so both sides toast up evenly. We start to watch and look inside after cooking for several minutes on each side to make sure it doesn’t get burnt. This can obviously be a hot job, so use oven mitts and help the kids!
Finished product! Once you have your pie on a plate, add some cinnamon and sugar to the top and pop that sucker in your mouth and enjoy.
These pies can obviously be made with any flavor of canned pie filling. And there are many uses for a cast iron cooker, which I’m excited to try. Pizzas, Nutella marshmallow pies, grilled cheese, egg sandwich, etc!
Having recently gone camping reminded me so much of how we love a real, wood burning fire to sit around. So… I pulled the trigger on a small, inexpensive fire pit to use in our driveway this fall. We have a gas fire pit in our back patio area, but the space around it is tight, mostly used for the four of us or a small group. Starting a fire in a fire pit that we bring out to the driveway will help extend our fall/winter nights outside! And food just tastes better over a wood burning fire! XO
