My family literally begs me to make homemade biscuits and gravy! It’s a comfort food that is simple to make so we have it often! We actually eat this for breakfast and sometimes for dinner, and the other day, we had it for lunch! Don’t let biscuits and gravy intimidate you! It is one of the easiest things I make and it requires very few ingredients. Here’s how to make homemade biscuits and gravy.
My mom gave me this recipe and it makes the perfect portion size for a family of 4-5. The last time we made it, I got the kids in on the action! Sister stirred the meat and brother made the biscuits.
If you want to make for a large gathering, I would double or triple the recipe. You can adjust the number of biscuits you make to suit the number of people are are serving. I serve immediately at home, but I throw it in a crockpot if taking it to a gathering. The ingredient list for homemade biscuits and gravy is small and this takes no time to pull together!
How to Make Biscuits and Gravy
Ingredients (Sausage Gravy):
- 1 pound pork sausage
- 1/4 cup minced onion
- 6 tablespoons flour
- 2 cans evaporated milk
- 1 cup water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1.5 teaspoons pepper
Instructions:
Use directions according to the biscuit mix you choose, or make homemade biscuits.
- Brown sausage and onion in a large stock pot.
- Stir in flour and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
- Pour in evaporated milk and water to the pot.
- Add salt and pepper.
- Cook until thick and bubbly. If it becomes too thick, add a little more milk or water.
- Cook biscuits according to package directions.
- Pour sausage gravy over open faced biscuits and serve!
The secret ingredient here is the pepper! Rarely does a recipe call for more pepper than salt, but that is the case here! You didn’t read it wrong. The pepper gives it that extra punch and flavor this gravy needs! Sometimes I serve with scrambled eggs on the side too. I hope you’ll give this homemade biscuit and gravy recipe a try! XO
