Are you sick of your white towels looking dirty even after you wash them? I mentioned recently that I only purchase and use white bath towels and several people asked how I keep them clean. Here’s how to revive white towels.
Our kids use a combo of striped and/or colored towels, but for whatever reason, I prefer a classic white towel for me and Steve and for guests. Over time white towels can get a little dingy. They can also start to feel scratchy or musty smelling after even one use. Using baking soda and vinegar revives white towels and keeps them feeling soft and looking clean!Â
How to Revive White Towels
- Gather your towels and put them in the washing machine.
- Add one cup baking soda to your detergent dispenser. I add about 10 drops of lavender essential oils on the baking soda.
- Add one cup vinegar to a liquid dispenser.
- Run the longest and hottest wash cycle you can choose (my lid had steam on it).
- Dry as normal. I use dryer balls and more lavender essential oils.
We only use our white towels for drying off post-shower and we don’t clean with them or wipe down other surfaces with them. Our towels get used about 2-3 times before putting them in the laundry bin. I have several white towels in our rotation as well, so they are not getting washed as often (which breaks down the fibers).
I have actually started using baking soda and vinegar quite to bit wash our regular clothes (I buy larger quantities on Amazon and store in this airtight container). Both known as fantastic cleaners, I knew they would be effective and safe. I always dry our clothes with dryer balls and essential oils too! I’m not against bleach, this is just a good alternative.
And that’s how to review white towels quickly and easily. Give this technique a try and let me know if you were able to revive your white towels! So easy, right?! XO

I had the same problem and tried it with the vinegar, didn't know about the baking soda. It did work, thankfully. I will do this on a monthly basis to keep the detergent from clogging my machine. Thanks for the tip:)

I need to try this! I hope it works with a front loader machine. Stinky towels are the worst!

So happy to hear this! Love it!!!
Can I do this with a high efficiency front loader?
Hi Laura, I am honestly not sure about high efficiency front loading washers. I just have an older version, top load, and it worked fine. Sorry I am not much help!
Is detergent being used in any of the two wash cycles or should this process be done on already washed towels?
With this wash cycle, no. You just use the vinegar and baking soda. All future washes, yes.
I use this in a front load HE washer. It works fine.
Has anyone done this with colored towels instead of white? My old but not ragged red kitchen hand towels are starting to smell mildewy.
