Last year I made and framed state silhouettes to be used as art in our last house. We have moved a lot! So this is an ode to that part of our life. When we moved into our new house in Kansas, I wanted to change them up a bit. Of course I had to add KS to the mix! And, lucky for me, Kansas is about the easiest state to trace and cut. I also made some silhouette plates as decor in my daughter’s room. You can find the tutorial for how to create the silhouettes in that post.Â
Items Needed
- colorful scrapbook paper of choice
- black cardstock
- frames (these come in a two-pack from Michael’s)
- mats for frames (also from Michael’s)
- scrapbook paper to create the heart of the area you lived in
Assembling the State Silhouette Art
Simply attach the silhouette to the scrapbook paper using a glue stick or tape. Put the paper in the frame and hang! The hardest part of this project is cutting the silhouettes.
I find that these are such a conversation piece, especially since we have moved so much. Every person that walks in our door says something about them. I wanted them to be easily seen, but in a casual space in the house. They are now much more streamlined and clean looking and add a nice little pop of color.
States on our Journey
- Iowa (Iowa City) – Where Steve and I went to college, met, and started dating
- Texas (Dallas) – First move right out of college, first real jobs, first real apartment, shortest amount of time spent here
- Florida (Orlando) – Got married while living in Florida, lived 2 miles from Universal Studios, enjoyed being newlyweds before kids!
- North Carolina (Charlotte) – One of our most favorite cities we have lived. Bought our first house here.
- South Carolina (Columbia) – Longest we have ever lived in any one place (3 years), both kids were born here, made some dear friends here, bought our second house.
- Texas (San Antonio) – Bought our third house, loved our neighborhood, only lived there for 16 short months. A wonderful city!
- Kansas (Overland Park) – Bought our fourth house, kids will start school here, trying to settle in and settle down for a little while! Loving it! Texas, of course, gets two hearts since we repeated this state! Time will tell if we ever move again (I stopped trying to predict these things 3 moves ago)! Because moving has been a large part of of lives, I love having this little reminder of where we have been and how far we have come together. I hop you enjoyed this post on how to make state silhouette art. XO

Those are so adorable! I love them! Megan
Very cute idea. I just may steal this one :). We, too, love San Antonio. We lived there for 10 years and a big chunk of heart is there still there since our adult son makes his home in SA now.
So fabulous! Glad I found your blog via Savvy Southern Style!!! You newest RSS subscriber!
I love the scrapbook paper and frames you chose!
Love them! I especially like Texas since I'm a Texas girl! They are so fun and add color to any space!
I absolutely love these!!! Those colors go together perfectly and with the white frames, they just pop! My husband is in the military, so we've moved around quite a bit too. This is my favorite way that I've seen to document the moves, so I'm going to have to do it ASAP! Thanks for sharing 🙂 I found you from Someday Crafts and I am now your newest follower!
I soooo want to do these! I love how they turned out. Pinning for future inspiration. Thanks for sharing. Saw your post on Someday Crafts: Whatever Goes Wednesday.
What a neat idea! I love them. I will be putting these on my 'to do' list! Thanks for sharing and thanks for the inspiration. 🙂
Very cute idea and they look lovely all grouped together.
