I cook dinner many nights of the week. And cleaning the kitchen before going to sleep is a must for me. This little hack I recently incorporated while cooking has made a life a little easier. The original concept of a “garbage bowl” came from Rachael Ray, the chef. I used to watch her 30 minute meals cooking show way back when and she always used one. Fast forward to December 2024 and I was watching a Rachael Ray cooking show on a flight back from Maui. She was still using her “garbage bowl”! I thought to myself that I need to start using one when we get home. So, here is why I started to use a garbage bowl when cooking.
What is a Garbage Bowl?
It is essentially any bowl that you keep near your prep/cooking space to throw all your trash in. It’s a very simple concept! It’s handy for egg shells, scraps from chopping, package trash, etc. The concept is the garbage bowl keeps you from running to the garbage to throw things out during the process of cooking. No more dirty hands touching the handle of garbage drawer at our house! Now, I throw everything in the garbage bowl and dump it one time. Then I wash, hand dry, and put in its place. Is it necessary? Absolutely not. Is it helpful? I find it to be!
Getting a Garbage Bowl
Absolutely use a bowl you already have on hand! This concept is free! I ordered a new, pretty wooden bowl to use as my designated garbage bowl. When it’s not in use, it sits on a shelf in the kitchen island. Functional and pretty! I hand wash this bowl and immediately dry so it stays in good shape. You could always add some food grade mineral oil to it if it needs shined up (that’s what I use on my wooden cutting board). There are two sizes of this exact wooden bowl and I went with the smaller version.
Yes, this is a simple concept and hack but I thought I would share in case you’ve never heard of it! I’m all about container the clutter, even food waste in the kitchen! XO
