How to Hang a Vintage Rug as Wall Art

I thrifted a vintage rug about 10 years ago and it’s kind of moved all over our home. It’s neutral with a pattern, thin and kind of a statement piece. After making some updates to our guest bedroom recently, I decided I would use this rug as art in the room. I needed something large to fill up an empty wall, and though this rug would be perfect. Here’s how to hang a vintage rug as wall art.

Deciding Where to Hang a Rug on the Wall

This large, empty wall in the guest bedroom was screaming for some texture and color and pattern! I love the look of the colors against the white walls. The wall color is SW Simply White. As with most things I hang, I totally eyeballed this one! Ha!

How to Hang a Vintage Rug as Wall Art

I wanted the rug to feel secure on the wall, but I didn’t want to create huge holes in it either. Ultimately, I decided to use brass upholstery tacks to hang the rug, since it’s a textile piece. You can find the exact ones I used by clicking here. They are both chic and kind of industrial looking. I simply used to my thumb to push them into place. Because this rug isn’t super heavy, I was able to get away with only using two tacks in the top corners.

How easy is this project?! The hardest part is finding the right piece for your space! You could insert any sort of textile here, in lieu of the rug. Think tapestry, linens, blanket, scarves, items from travels, etc.

I love the fact that this is vintage, thrifted, and that no one else will have this look in their homes. Whenever I can create moments like this in our home, it makes me happy! A different texture in the space keeps things from looking the same throughout. There is also some more graphic artwork to the right of this rug, so it helps balance those squared off lines.

I hope you enjoyed seeing how to hang a vintage rug as wall art. It’s fun to think outside the box! Instead of stepping on this rug, it gets to be displayed and enjoyed. Find info on our new carpet here. XO
