It’s January! The month of planning and scheming about all this things I want to do to our home! First up, we decided on a primary bedroom refresh. We have lived in our home for 10 years, which is hard to believe! For whatever reason, our bedroom has always been put on the back burner over the years. We’ve done some small things, but I have never LOVED it. Our primary bedroom is absolutely huge (378 sq. ft. to be exact). I told Steve we have our own small apartment in there! The size seems nice until it isn’t. It feels so big that it feels hard to fill. Hard to make cozy. So, we’re focusing on our primary bedroom first this year and I’m laying out what we’re doing! These photos are what we have currently. I’ll update a post when it’s all done!
Paint
Our bedroom used to be a deep, moody blue. We painted it Swiss Coffee a few years ago and I love it. It’s a warm white and I’ll never tire of it. The paint is not changing!
Floors
The first big thing we are doing to this room is ripping out the carpet and putting in hardwood floors. We have rustic maple floors in a 50/50 cut of Ebony and Special Walnut throughout most of our home. The basement has some carpet and the kids/guest bedrooms have carpet. Everything else is hardwood and that makes me happy! I recently got three different quotes and we decided on someone today! Hardwood floors will absolutely transform this huge space. The rug will pop (rug is staying), and it will ground the space and make it feel warm.
I’m not concerned at all about it feeling cold or hard. I love me some rugs and some faux fur, so there will be plenty of texture and soft surfaces to step on!
Plants
Of course, the plant lady needs her fix! We have a large banana plant in an unused corner, which will be staying. I am on the hunt for one large plant/tree for the side of the bed where Steve sleeps. It’s a corner that doesn’t get a ton of light, so I’m going to have to manage that. I’m shooting for large scale plants in here since the room is so large.
Dresser
Our current dresser is a large, solid wood, cherry dresser that we’ve had for 20 years. I’m not kidding! It looks like new and it has served us well, but obviously I’m ready for this dated thing to go. I’ve got my eye on this black dresser from West Elm at the current moment, but the price tag is keeping me from pulling the trigger. I still want to look at some local furniture stores before making a decision. Again, we need something larger scale to fit underneath our mounted television.
Bed Frame
We currently have an upholstered headboard with metal bed frame and box spring. I just purchased this bed frame and should arrive in a few days. Getting rid of the box spring and old bed frame is going to be a game changer. The whole bed will sit a few inches shorter now, so I’m hoping can just get used to that. If you are local to Kansas City, you might consider donating old mattresses and box springs to Sleepy Head Beds, a non-profit organization. For $40, they will come and haul this away for you and give to someone in the area who needs a bed to sleep on. I just love this.
Bench or Stools
I’m undecided whether or not to add something to the end of the bed. The new bed frame is finished off, but I’m afraid I’ll need something for scale. We also use the current bench at the foot of the bed all the time, so I’ll probably add something. Decisions, decisions!
Hat Wall + Mirror
This area will stay as-is…plant, hat wall, mirror. We use this mirror every single day and this faux fur rug is going to look so good on top of dark hardwood floors! Can’t wait! Here’s a post on the DIY hat wall if you’re interested.
Curtains + Shades + Nightstands
Curtains (Ikea Ritva) and shades (cut to size from Lowe’s) will be staying put. I’ve had them up for as long as we have lived here and have never tired of them. They get the job done, and will be left as-is! The white curtains will also pop off the dark hardwoods floors. Our nightstands are easy to clean and I like the pop of black, so they are staying as well. Shop our white lamps here.
Lighting
We currently have a vintage light fixture in the “sitting area” (which we don’t use as a sitting area) that I love. The black ceiling fan is staying. We recently replaced it and we actually use it, so the lighting stays as-is.
Trim Moulding
One final thing on my wishlist is to do something to the large wall behind the bed. I’ve been pinning thin trim moulding that I think will just give it the “something” I”m looking for. I’m intrigued by these precut, stick on mouldings, which means no tools required! I’ll keep you posted on this! Time to see if I can put Steve to work on that!
Be sure to follow along on Instagram as I’ll be bringing you through the process! We are scheduled to start on the hardwoods floors in a few weeks! I’m excited about this primary bedroom refresh – finally making us a priority! I asked on Instagram a long time ago for some hardwood flooring company recs. You all came through. Wanted to share in case you are looking around too. Send me a note if you want me to add to this list.
