Hello! It’s been a minute! We’ve had a lot of snow days this winter! A perfect time to complete a small painting project in Kate’s room! Country Chic Paint reached out to me to see if I would like to try their line of chalk paints. I knew I had the perfect piece that needed redone. And it was a great motivator to actually DO IT and not just talk about it!
Kate’s dresser was already white! Why would I paint it white again, you ask? This dresser was original wood when I bought it at a thrift store 8 years ago. I painted it red when I first got it. Then I wanted to paint it white and used oil based paint. It took forever to dry and several coats and it still ended up looking a little pink. The dresser was also chipped after having it in my daughter’s room. White is a classic choice that will grow with her (she’s currently 10 y/o). Country Chic Paint sent me a primer to use over the top of the existing white oil based paint. No sanding necessary! Love that!
We decided to just paint it in her room using a drop cloth underneath. We first cleaned it well, then started adding a coat of the primer to the dresser. We applied it using a sponge they sent and it was so easy to use. I was able to get into every nook and cranny with that sponge. I used one coat of primer on the dresser and the drawers and let it dry overnight. We barely used any of the primer, so we will have leftovers for future projects.
Next, we picked one of two whites they sent. We went with the color Simplicity. Kate actually chose it because it was a little more white and less cream. They have so many pretty colors to choose from! This is clay based paint, which I have never worked with before. I loved the ease and the texture so much!
I added one coat of paint using the brush pictured above. It was so simple to use and it didn’t leave brush marks. The texture is definitely dull and more chalky, but the paint covered so well. I was amazed how well it covered the oil based paint that was on there before. After the first coat, I let it dry for several hours before starting the second coat. Each coat took me no time. I felt the coverage was so good after two coats that I was done! Simple! This small container of paint was more than enough for two coats for this dresser.
Here are some more photos of the completed project! I love how it turned out, even though it doesn’t look that different. I know that it is now fully “white” and all the chips are gone!
I also touched up the dresser hardware while I was at it. I used my favorite metallic gold spray paint. This is a super simple way to update your hardware. It was already this color, but it does fade/rub off over time, so I just gave it another quick coat.
