I’m absolutely loving my chalkboard wall! Everyone that comes over notices it right away and I love changing up the words every month or so. My kids don’t play at it, so the mess is pretty minimal. The only thing that annoys me is that it is hard to clean! I did a little research and read that people have used a vinegar/water solution and even Coke to clean chalk walls. I also read that adding just a little dish soap to warm water could do the trick. Here’s how to clean a chalkboard wall.
Dish Soap + Water
First, I added some dish soap to a bucket of water. Then I worked the cloth in small sections in a circular motion on the chalk wall. I came behind the wet cloth with a dry one. The top section is just water, the middle section is dish soap and water after it has dried, and the bottom is still wet. Lucky for me, this chalk wall is not very big! You can see the difference adding the dish soap made.
It’s certainly not perfect, but it is the best thing I have tried so far. Not sure I have the guts to put Coke on my walls!
Prime the Chalk Wall
I have also read that you should “prime” your chalk wall every few times you use it. Simply clean the wall, turn a chalk piece on its side, and rub all over the wall. Clean again and the surface is primed and ready!
Check out the post where I painted the chalk wall here! UPDATE: I repainted the chalkboard wall after a few years to refresh it, but continue to use the same cleaning method years later. XO

Thanks so much for this advice. We have a chalkboard wall in our playroom and I always use a wet microfiber cloth to clean it, but I'm going to try this, too. I found your blog through Pinterest (striped curtains- love!) and I'm looking forward to reading your posts!
Emily – thank you for stopping by! xo
Hi Kelly! I tried Coke and it didn't work for me! I think the vinegar and warm water is a good idea that I will have to try! Good luck-love a chalkboard!
I used to volunteer at my church in the kids ministry, and they use a combination of Coke and water in these large spray bottles to clean a huge chalk wall — It was my job every time to clean up after the kids, and it worked MIRACLES. I didn't believe it either, and yes, it does leave the floor a little stick (with the spray drifting down), but I'd swear by it. Did you try it just by dabbing it on? Put it in a bottle with water. It will change your life!
