How to Create a Paper Lantern Pom Cluster for Decor

pom cluster

Kate’s room is coming together and I wanted to start sharing a few things I have been doing with it.  I decided to add a pom cluster to the corner of her asymmetrical ceiling to add a fun pop of color.  Last week, I finally got all of the pieces of the cluster hung. Here’s how to create a paper lantern and pom cluster for decor.

Supplies Needed

The pink/white paper balls came from my sister (she found them on clearance a few years ago). White tissue poms are Martha Stewart purchased from Michael’s, and the pink paper lanterns are a recent purchase from Hobby Lobby. You will also need eye hooks and fishing wire to hang the cluster in place.

Make Your Own Poms

I needed a few more tissue poms, so I decided to make the pink ones myself.  You can get a full and complete tutorial at http://www.marthastewart.com/how-to/tissue-paper-pom-poms-how-to#slide_0. I purchased multi-color tissue paper packs from Dollar Tree and took out the hot pink paper.

Place 6-8 pieces of paper on top of one another and fold the paper back and forth, like an accordion fold.

I used a pair of decorative edged scissors to give the edges some interest.

Secure the paper with floral wire in the middle (or any sort of twist tie).

Pull each piece of individual paper back towards the center until the pom becomes full.

Once I had all the pieces assembled, I gathered fishing wire and eye hooks.

Hanging the Lantern and Pom Cluster

I will say that hanging the cluster was not a quick process. Because I decided to do this all by myself, it was a lot of up and down on the step ladder! In the end, I was able to screw three hooks into the ceiling and hang each piece of the cluster individually at difference lengths using fishing wire.  I wanted them to hang tight to the ceiling so lots of pulling and trial and error!

You could use the system in a play room, kid’s room, for a party, etc. I think it adds a fun pop of color, dimension, and whimsy, especially since there are higher ceilings in this room! I hope this helps with how to create a paper lantern pom cluster for decor! XO
