DIY Rain Gutter Bookshelves

These DIY rain gutter bookshelves are still one of my favorite things about Drew’s bedroom.  These shelves have also been hung in three different homes, so you know they hold up well! Here’s how to create DIY rain gutter bookshelves for your kid’s bedroom or toy room.

Items Needed

In Drew’s previous two bedrooms, I used 3 shelves, each 3 feet long.  In this house I chose to just use two of them.  I found out about this idea way back in 2009 when I read this post from Jenny Komenda.  There, you can find different links and tutorials if you wish to tackle this project.  You simply need three pieces of plastic rain gutter that you can purchase at any home improvement store.  The gutters have caps that you can purchase for each end. They screw in on each end using a plastic plate that connects the wall and the gutter. These rain gutter shelves are durable, inexpensive, and easy to clean!

I love the industrial look these gutters provide for a little boy’s room, or a toy room, or really any room in which you need storage. These would also be great to hold things other than books.  The color the front facing books add to a space is everything! Form and function meet here with the books as decor and the Drew has books at his fingertips!

Other Accessories in the Room

The large D above the shelves was a thrift store find for .99.  I spray painted it a glossy red.  You can also find these large letters at Joann Fabric, which is where I bought Kate’s “K” to use for this project.  The toy storage unit underneath is IKEA.  Wall paint color is SW Big Chill.  How are you storing your books? I hope you enjoyed seeing how we use rain gutter bookshelves in our home! XO
