Kate just turned four! I decided I wanted to make a large number “4” to hang on the door for an additional decoration for her party. This DIY project was done over coffee (fittingly, right?) the morning before the party with supplies I already had on hand. Here’s how to make a dipped coffee filter number for a party decoration.
Supplies Needed
- Large piece of cardboard (or something to make your base from)
- Coffee filters (brown or white both work here)
- Hot glue
- Craft paint of choice
- Command strips
How to Create a Dipped Coffee Filter Number
I free handed a large number four on a piece of thin cardboard and cut it out. This does not have to be perfect, as the coffee filters will hide any imperfections.
Now, start gluing! This is the part that takes the longest. The basic concept is to fold the filter in half and then half again. Put a dab of glue on the bottom and push onto the cardboard. You will start to get an idea of how close together to glue them after you do about 20. Tip: The coffee filters will fan out so you don’t have to glue as tight together as you might think!
You can see above I had to trim some of the coffee filters after finishing. Some were standing higher than others. It’s easy to make it uniform using scissors to trim.
I wanted to add a little pink to the number, so painted the edges of the coffee filters with pink craft paint. It sort of gives it a tie dye effect.
I would have probably preferred white coffee filters, but I already had several natural ones on hand and I like to use what I have.
